Hi there Mountside21,
We understand you're experiencing an issue with updating your MacBook Air to macOS Big Sur, and we'd like to see if we can assist.
To get started, disconnect any peripheral devices, and attempt the macOS install again.
If the install issue persists, create a new user account, and try installing macOS Big Sur there: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac
Should you experience the same install issue, delete the installer file, and try downloading it again.
We hope this helps.

I did exactly as you said and attempted a second install. It took some considerable time but I eventually got there. I now have Big Sur.
I only decided to start this process because my safari seized up. Anyway it is all working okay now. So thanks again to for all the help from community.
Mountside21,
Thanks for giving those steps a try, and keeping us updated on the results.
