Ethernet Cable causing Problems

Question for you techie types... my ethernet is giving me a headache. When

plugged into my usb splitter via an Apple adapter(I've plugged it

directly into the computer, still nothing) I get no internet connection.

If I turn wifi off I still get nothing. System preferences tells me

it's connected when I'm not getting a connection. I have switched out

adapter and cable. I have talked to Optimum, Apple, and Source

Connect... they all say it's not on their end. Optimum says it may be

that my computer is out of date(It's a mid 2011 MacBook Air. I know:

ancient) but it did work until a few months ago. Any ideas would be

appreciated. I deleted both the cable and the Apple Adapter from Network in System Preferences but nothing. Any ideas? Thanks

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.13

  1. Make sure your internet service is working as expected. Connect directly using the ethernet cable from your modem to a PC or Mac. Confirm you can visit your typical websites.

A. If your internet is not working. Try turning off the modem and turning it on again. Call your provider for help.

2- After confirming your internet works. Plug in the ethernet cable directly into your Mac (no splitter). Use an adapter if necessary. Make sure you have the latest firmware/software if you are using a third party brand.

3- Update your firmware on your modem, router, wireless devices & everything in between.
