Start up- flashing file with question mark

When starting up our Macbook Air a file logo with question mark appears and continues to flash. What do we need to do from here?

Have to admit to 'copy-paste' reply ~ from earlier today:

If your Mac starts up to a Question Mark - Apple Support

"A folder with a 'flashing question mark' means that your startup disk is

no longer available or doesn't contain a working Mac operating system."

..Good luck & happy computing.!

Were you able to start up the Mac from macOS Recovery and then proceed to

use Disk Utility on the unmounted system? (this would probably use Internet to

access Disk Utility. Or the recovery partition on the Mac's drive, if HD is OK)

There are a few other steps one may do, and hopefully your Mac had an external

USB backup on 'Time Machine' with a dedicated storage drive for that purpose.

(Done as a preventative measure ~ Time Machine can set as automatic feature.)

With backup, you could restore the Mac's drive content; even if the original drive

failed and were replaced. An authorized Service suggests you have backups prior

to submitting your computer for inspection and repair.

[You may contact official Apple support and check details on how to arrange

a repair. Depending on location or region, they could offer "send-in" service.]

I've either had backups (time machine or manual) and at times, boot-capable

full system Clones. Those can run a Mac from an external drive; on better type

of backup within a powered enclosure. Usually with higher speed connections.

An appointment to have the Mac inspected and estimated cost, given by an

official Apple service specialist, or an authorized Apple service; then proceed

to have the unit repaired, or replaced, etc. (per assessment.)

Time wasted here, looking into browser bookmarks for Apple links!

You could arrange for a repair not under warranty; ask about their

'send-in' service, if your nearby official Apple repair is limited now.

Those can go to a repair depot; not to local Apple Store.

Well, I've outdoor things to do here. Been watching unseasonable

Wx happen, & upkeep is alot like unpaid work. Easier to sit here, not

get paid; rather than drudge outside house w/ snow-tools, + ladder.

{Least there's no commute; to try & keep overhead roof from falling.}

There are some suggestions to try within attached link, as that offers a few good choices.

A matter of symptoms; those are high on the list to cure the cause. Could be simple,

or may involve repairs to the system; or re-installing all, or a portion of the macOS.

However each of those has conditions & details that need be followed; if nothing else,

as troubleshooting measures. This could involve trying stuff ~ to see what works.

The page has fair information and is a good reference to bookmark.
