How do I switch between profiles on ipad?

I set my 5 yr old up on Family Sharing with the purpose of him using his only profile (with restricted content, etc) when using my ipad. Seems the only way to allow this is for me to sign out of the ipad and sign in as him. Is this right and if so, what is the downside to doing this? A scary note pops up about losing icloud data.
