Apple Pencil Compatibility Issue

So am I to understand that the iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation isn’t compatible with either 1st or 2nd Gen Apple pencils? I don’t get why the 2nd generation Pencil would work with a 1st gen 11-inch pro but not the second gen 11-inch pro.
