Password required instead of Touch ID to unlock MacBook Pro

I rarely have a problem using Touch ID to unlock my MacBook. I walk away from it, it locks on its own based on my settings or I lock it myself and when I come back I use Touch ID to unlock it with all the applications and internet browser windows where I left them. However, from time to time it will say that I need to enter my password to unlock it. In these instances it's as if I restarted my MacBook and everything I was working on is closed.

It happened to me just before I asked this question. I stepped away for about 15 minutes, when I came back, I needed to enter my password, all the pages I was working on, gone.

Why does this happen and how can I prevent it? I'm on a 2018 MacBook Pro, Processor 2.6 GHz Intel i7, running Big Sur v11.1

Hello D.W.Garcia,

It sounds like your Mac unexpectedly restarted. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.

First, let's review the steps outlined here: If your Mac restarted because of a problem

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? When did you first notice this? How often does this happen? Also, does this happen regardless of which application is left open?

Cheers!
