iPad Air 2 not working correctly, dark screen but backlight on

I have an iPad Air 2 and it will not show graphics on the screen, I just see the backlight.

I have tried to reboot by holding down the home button and power button together, i see the backlight go off after a few seconds, but nothing happens after that, ive tried doing this for about 2 minutes, holding them down but nothing. I should see the Apple logo after 20 secs I believe.

I have also plugged in to my Mac to force a restore through iTunes, by holding the home button and plugging the lightning cable in at the same time. iTunes see's the iPad, but doesnt show any information about it like the Serial number, it just displays an N/A, just names it iPad air 2.

I then get the option to restore the iPad, but each time I try I get an error message after a period of time, after iTunes has 'extracted software', then, either gets stuck on 'waiting for iPad' or 'preparing iPad for restore' before showing the error message (cant remember the exact message)

I'm not sure what else to try, so if anyone has any further tips or things to try then please do let me know.

Thinking it may be a hardware issue, screen or battery? as anyone else seen the same and can confirm which of these it is?
