ITunes and Apple Music With IPod Classic

Recently bought an IPod Classic Gen 6 160 Gb with songs on it (not ITunes). Downloaded songs from ITunes on PC with Windows 10, tried to transfer to IPod, got error msg that IPod needed to be formatted. Backed up existing music to PC and formatted IPod which cleaned it. Tried to sync IPod with ITunes (checked songs and sync, created playlists in left window, I think I got all steps correct). Got an error msg that Apple Music cannot be loaded on IPod. So is ITunes now actually Apple Music as far as the IPod is concerned? Any workarounds to suggest? Thanks.

The Apple Music rental service provides DRM protected music that you can use in iTunes while your subscription remains active. Content obtained through this service, or anything that is currently in the cloud, cannot be copied to an iPod classic. You should be able to add other media from your library.
