encryption in time machine freezes computer

hi all,

I am trying to do my first time machine backup with encryption from my MacBook Pro to a new Lacie external hard drive.

the back-up itself went ok until 59GB of 75GB , but then got stuck for quiet some time.

The back up must have finished, but time machine is still busy encrypting the Lacie for about 8hours and hasn't moved from 2% since.

when trying to acces time machine it freezes the Mac, and finder and time machine does not react for minutes. giving the spinning color wheel. My Lacie is not visible anymore on my computer .

(see photo)

I know the first encryption and back up may take a long time, but there has been no movement in the progres for hours.

Is this a normal situation? as I am worried something is actually wrong.

i made a photo to show situation. (in Dutch)

thank you for any help.

Problem has gone away. Force stopped my mac as it would not shut down anymore.

after restart and reconnecting ext hard drive , it would pick up at the 59 gb it had stopped and finished in 20 minutes. Its now running encryption during night at 10% after 1 hour.

i think the problem got worse by unchecking the “automatic time machine backup “ button.

i do not recommend force stopping your computer. But it seemed the only way out.
