No volume to HDMI device

iMac Pro 2017 stopped sending audio out via USB-C Multi-Media Adapter, while operating off iOS Catalina. Again, it stopped, meaning it once worked before. It still shows a display. When going to sound preference, Output and selected the HDMI device, it shows "The selected device has no output controls". Tried updating the iOS to Big Sur 11.1, and tried a different USB-C to HDMI adapter and a new HMDI cable, still no luck with audio being sent to the HDMI device, only display. Please help!

Okay... what is the hdmi equipped device you are plugging it into?? If it’s a monitor, press the menu button, then go to settings, then general, then sound, and turn up the volume...if you are talking about Apple’s USB-C Digital AV multiport adapter, that does indeed support video and audio output..moshi made one that does as well. I don’t know the maker or model of your USB-C multi media adapter. Apparently lots of companies make them, apart from Apple and Moshi, of course. See if you can find a maker name and model on that USB-C multimedia adapter and go to the maker’s website. Also, see if there are any firmware updates for that thing. -again- go to the maker’s website... and try doing an smc reset on your iMac Pro 2017. It probably has the T2 security chip in it... and here’s what Apple has to say about HDMi audio (link)

Yes, that is correct... if HDMI is selected as the audio output, you won’t see a volume control, as the mac assumes that the hdmi device you connected it to will have an amp and speakers and thus, its own volume control. If you hold down the Option key and click on the speaker icon at the top of your screen, it will show all available audio inputs and output. You may also have to set it up as an audio output with Audio midi setup. It should also show up as an audio output under system preferences>>sound>>alerts/effects. There should be an option to “play sound through” Oh, and don’t try changing it while your iMac pro is running, or the the hdmi destination (reciever/tv) is running/is in operation. HDMI is not hot-swappable....

good luck
