External SSD Disconnects Repeatedly Mac Mini M1 (Big Sur)

Has anyone had an issue with your external SSD's on Thunderbolt (and a few times on USB3) just randomly disconnecting? It disconnects and reconnects instantly and comes back online after tossing a notification not to disconnect a drive without hitting eject.

I'm still trying to root cause this, but my hypothesis is that it's an Intel / Rosetta emulation issue. I've only been able to have this occur on drives that have an Intel process attached and writing to it (reading doesn't seem to cause it). And, it's not every single instance / case.

Adobe Premiere:

Exporting a from from a video as PNG or whatnot with a destination to that drive causes the notification to pop up around 60% of the time. It feels as though the longer the system is up the more likely the notification is (and sometimes it won't write the file, other times it will write and notify).

Dragging those same files from the main disk using the Finder, however, works fine (as does exporting from a native app like Pixelmator Pro).

Google Backup & Sync:

Upon boot one of my external SSD's gets hit with repeated disconnect notifications and I noticed that it's being 'synced' by Google Backup & Sync (as that's my destination for Google Drive). Once google drive is idle and done syncing, the notifications stop.

Unfortunately when exporting a video in Premiere to with source media on one of the SSD's, if google backup/sync runs and causes a disconnect, the video export will render out out "black" in the spaces in which the drive "blipped" offline for a moment.

Still trying to find use cases and track down how/when it occurs. One experiment, I moved all the SSD's off thunderbolt and onto a USB hub (with a few adapters and such) and the problem went away...but one of my other USB drives started getting the notification once or twice a day. So odd...

Thoughts? Want to share any information?

This is a 500GB Mac Mini M1 running 11.1 (16 GB memory).

Brand new system, my old mac's did not exhibit this problem but they also were not M1's and they were not running Big Sur.

PS: Also cannot reproduce this using Black Magic Speed Test against these SSD's even though it's Intel and it's doing large writes (maybe it's small writes that exhibit it easier?)

I think my issue is resolved. Its been a couple of weeks with no disconnects due, I believe, to de-selecting "Put Hard Drives to Sleep" under System Preferences/Energy Saver selections. I was reading elsewhere that some people were having different sleep/wake issues, so thought I'd try this selection to see if it would make a difference, and it seems to be the answer so far.

Sleeping HDD was never a problem with Catalina on my old iMac (even though using SSD), so I didn't think it would be any different with Big Sur and M1 Mini (and it doesn't affect the Mini's SSD), but apparently it may* be the cause of the disconnects I was having with external drives.

*I will report if the problem recurs.

They are two M.2 NVME NGFF SSD Enclosures (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DCLPYGK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

RTL9210B Chips, USB C 3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps NVME, 6Gbps SATA PCIe M-Key(B+M Key), External Solid State Drive Support UASP Trim for SSD Size 2242/2260/2280

They house my two M.2 drives that I pulled from my old computer which house my Adobe Premiere scratch and projects.

However, I've recently had issues with a seagate SSD (USB3).

I'm having the same issue. Mini M1, 256GB, 16GB memory, Big Sur 11.1

I have two external drives, one 500GB HDD in a bus-powered enclosure and the other a 1TB HDD in self powered enclosure. Both are set up as Time Machine backup drives and will randomly, separately, repeatedly and inexplicably cause "Disk Not Ejected Properly" warnings. As long as they are plugged in, they will reappear on the desktop - even if I properly eject them. Sometimes hours will pass without the issue, but then it occurs. Seems not to have any ill effects that I've noticed.

I can't correlate this symptom to anything specific. I have switched ports, cables, etc. but seems to make no difference. Both drives and cables have been used on a previous Mac without issues and I have run First Aid as well without issues.

Maybe it has something to do with Time Machine. I have another external drive that I use for non-system file storage (music, photos, documents, etc.) and it has never had this issue.

Hopefully, there will be a reason and solution?

I'm having the same issue. M1 Macbook Air. Samsung 250GB SSD. Works fine on all other devices but randomly disconnects on the Macbook. This is when nothing is moving and I have tried multiple cables. It only seems to happen when the drive is being accessed a lot -which is annoying because certain software I use crashes each time it does it and I have to start again.

I've had to take to moving the files onto the main drive - working there - and then moving them back again.

I have upgraded to the latest OS (last night) and the problem is not solved.

I've got the same issue, I have tried with external device plugged into my MacBook Pro (2014) and via docking station. I have an external HDD and SDD. The HDD seems well behaved, the SSD gives a disk not ejected properly every time I tried to read a large file from it. I have adjusted the setting for disk sleep and power settings with no change, the result is also similar whether plugged directly into the USB port on the MacBook or the docking station which is connected via thunderbolt. I can mange to move small files, even multiple GB of small files, but get 100% consistent failure on the SDD moving a multi GB file (photo library). The External SSD is in OWC case with the original MacBook 512GB memory card in it, and works fine on my other MacBook running Catalina. It also worked fine on this MacBook before upgrading to Big Sur.

I have the same problem with my 202 M1 Macbook Air repeatedly ejecting my seagate ext hard drives (connected via a Rocketeck 14-in-1 USB hub). I have gone into Battery in settings and deselected "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible" (and have left the other two selected). My only workaround has been using the Amphetamine app (which also sometimes fails). Anyone have any suggestions on what else I can try?

To your questions:

  1. No, it is not limited to one OS or to M1 Macs. I have been experiencing this issue since upgrading to Catalina on a 2018 MacBook Pro 13" with Touchbar.
  2. I don't know. For me, it has mostly happened with an external SSD connected directly, but it also happened when I connected the same SSD through an OWC hub that I sent back (because it didn't solve this issue). It also happened with another disk, a traditional HDD, the other day for the first time. The SSD was also connected at that time.
  3. I have used chat to start and document the conversation, and they have had someone higher in the chain call me back to discuss.

Apple Support takes no steps to help with this issue.

My personal "solution" has been to connect the Satechi hub to another powered hub I had with 3 external HDD. It defeats the purpose of the speedy SSD 2TB internal drive I have in the Satechi, but I now have my Dropbox directly connected to TAMBIÉN USB-C port in a Toshiba T5, so, for the moment at least it woks for me.

I am having so many issues with this M1 Mac mini anyway, I am starting to regret buying it: Doesn't find my NAS; doesn't find my AirPort Extreme for Time Machine; Dropbox doesn't work properly; Luminar Neo uses nearly all my 16gb internal RAM, etc etc etc...I see myself more and more again on my 2017 iMac 27"... Go figure...

I updated the OS to 12.2, but no luck, same thing is happening.

My setup is M1 Mac mini, Benq SW Photographer monitor, two Lacie 8GB 2big raids units, and two Lacie rugged SSD 2TB, and a Thunderbolt 4 Hub from CalDigit.

Again no change with OS 12.2, with or without the hub.

My work around is to basically unmount my raid backup units and working SSDs to prevent corrupt.

Thanks Apple!

I just got a new Mac Studio with M1 MAX processor. It has the two USB C ports in front which I used to connect my Time Machine (WD 12TB) via a USB A to USB C adapter. The adapter plugs into the computer with a satisfactory CLICK, and seemed to work just fine, but on the second day of use the error message about unmounting the drive before disconnecting came up. Indeed, the drive icon was no longer on the desktop. But I noticed something odd. If I moved the USB cable a short distance at a point about 8 inches from where it connects to the USB adapter the drive would spin up and mount again. Looking very closely, I noticed that moving the cable made the adapter shift a bit in the USB C port on the computer. If I pushed it the other direction it moved back and it would dis-mount and throw the error message. I moved the adapter to the right USB C port (next to the SD card slot) and that seems to work OK so far, but I am wondering if the physical contacts in the port are making poor contact. The drive had been flawless up to this point, so I am not sure what to make of this. The adapter seems loose in the port. Anyone else see anything like this?

Yeah, I had some luck moving the SSD's to different configurations and hanging them off hubs, then other things started to have the disconnects instead of the same ol' SSD. I left the system idle over the weekend, I had one or two disconnects just sitting here with my non-thunderbolt connected devices.

It feels slightly random, but I'm sure there is some pattern of behavior I'm missing since I cannot see every single process's I/O patterns.
