Can anyone tell me what this is and how to fix it? It’s an old iPad but is still useful and just wondered if this could be fixed. Underneath the screen the iPad is still fully functional just cannot see what is actually going on.

If iPad isn’t responding, do one of the following:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If iPad still doesn’t turn on, or if it gets stuck during start up, see the Apple Support article If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t turn on or is frozen.

The iPad turns on and off, you just can’t see what’s going under the screen because the screen is not showing anything but a white screen with a black boarder slowly closing in. When attempting to screen shot, you can hear the screenshot noise and when plugged into a PC to upload the photos you can see that the screenshot is there which means the iPad internally is working but the screen is not. I’m just wondering if there is anything to do to fix this.

If the previously provided procedures to force-restart - or recover a frozen device - where unsuccessful, you’ll need to seek assistance directly from Apple Support - or from the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store.

Being a very old iPad3, long since out of support, you would be well advised to backup and data from the iPad whist you remain able to do so. Repairs, even if possible, are unlikely to economic - as the cost will significantly outweigh any potential benefit.
