Safari Images not showing up in Canvas. Effects all colleges with Canvas LMS

I am not seeing images in Safari when using Canvas. Images in all my courses appear as question marks. I have cleared the cache and history, I have made sure that DISABLE Images in Developer is not checked, restarted Safari and even rebooted my machine. I used the suggestion from another post to visit Preferences/Privacy/Manage Web Site Data. I removed two website elements related to instructure.com, the websites for Canvas. After I do, the images immediately load correctly, but if I refresh the page then the images are gone again. When Safari reloads that web data from instructure.com then the images won't reload?!? Other browsers do not have this issue. Chrome and Firefox load these images properly. This issue actually comes and goes. I had the problem a week ago, then it went away. Now it is back? Should I abandon Safari? My students are having enough challenges studying for my class, but if they can't see the images either we are all in trouble. I have already had students question why images aren't loading? I don't know what to say. Can anyone help?

Hi profbastedo,

Thanks so much for clarifying and providing this information.

Does it help to disable Cross-site Tracking in Safari Preferences under the Privacy section, at least temporarily for testing? This link explains more about this privacy feature, and how it works:

Prevent cross-site tracking in Safari on Mac

If not, will it be possible to test this website on another Mac computer running Big Sur 11.1? We can also recommend creating a temporary new user account following the steps in this guide to confirm if the issue persists in that account:

Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

At that point, if the issue is still occurring, it may indicate that it's on the side of the website design, and we can recommend reaching out to the web developer for further assistance, or to inquire about a workaround.

Have a great day.

Hi profbastedo,

Thanks so much for following up and clarifying! This is excellent and helpful information. Since the issue does not occur when connected through your iPhone Personal Hotspot, it indicates some kind of network routing issue with your home Wi-Fi.

If we determine that your Mac is otherwise working as expected, we may end up having to refer to the website developers of Canvas, to your router manufacturer, or to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) directly. First, we'd like to share a great resource that has recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers, and to go over a few troubleshooting steps.

Here's a link to a support guide you can use to verify your router is configured optimally. Refer to your router user guide or the manufacture for instructions on how to configure your specific router's settings:

Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

Testing with your Personal Hotspot was a great isolation step. If you haven't already done so, we can also recommend starting your Mac in safe mode, to verify that there isn't some login item causing a network issue. Here's a guide to help:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Safe mode clears caches of temporary data, so if the issue is resolved in safe mode, restart your Mac again, and see if it has also been resolved after a normal startup.

If the issue returns, you'll want to test your login items to see if one is causing a conflict:

Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac

If the issue still occurs in safe mode, the next step would be to start up in macOS Recovery, and launch Safari from there. This is a way to fully isolate the issue to the home network itself, as it includes only a factory installation of Safari with no extensions or other software changes. Here's a guide to walk you through the process of starting Safari in macOS Recovery:

About macOS Recovery

Once your see the Recovery Utilities, choose the option to start Safari.

At that point, if the issue is still occurring, it confirms a network root cause. You may attempt confirming or changing the DNS server settings used by your Mac and router at that point, or contacting your ISP directly. This final guide goes over steps to configure the DNS Server settings:

Specify a DNS server on Mac

We're here for you if you've got any questions.

Take care!

Reply #2. See my first reply below. Here is another interesting detail. I was getting image loads while using the hotspot on my iPhone. I now switched back to my home network and now the images load fine. Simply switching away from my home network, and then switching back seems to have solved the issue. I don't really want to do this every time that this problem arises, but it is a work around. Any way to figure out what is really going on?

Hi profbastedo,

Thanks so much for coming to Apple Support Communities to inquire about this issue you're experiencing in Safari on your Mac. We'd love to look into it with you and help in any way we can, so that your images load without issue.

To start, please let us know more about what's going on. Is Canvas an application on your Mac? If so, does the behavior continue to occur after you quit and exit the Canvas application?

Or is Canvas a website that you're visiting from within Safari? If so, let us know if the information in this guide helps:

If Safari doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected

If the issue persists, please head to Apple menu () > About this Mac and let us know the exact version of macOS you're using.

Have a great day!

Canvas is a website used by hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the US and the world. It has become the dominant player in Learning Management Systems. Learning management systems are the medium through which instructors and students interact online. Canvas is used by all the community colleges in California. Its main website is instructure.com, but each college or university has its own site and login. Ours is sbccd.instructure.com. I am working on my MacBook Pro (13.1" 2020, macOS 11.1Big Sur).

I tried the suggestions in the link. Reloading a page didn't work, neither did turning off extensions (only 1). Using a private window didn't work. I found something interesting in network connections. I have the same problem on another device (my iMac) which is on my same home network (I am currently working from home). But, when I switch networks on my MacBook from my home network to the hotspot on my iPhone, the problem disappears. It seems that running through my home network might be the culprit. Any thoughts on this?

I guess that our focus was premature. When I switch to my hotspot now, it doesn't fix the issue. Something about switching the other day, must have reset something accidentally. I don't think that it is the network or ISP because everything works fine with the Chrome browser or the Firefox browser. The MacBook and network seem to be fine. I did try to start up in safe mode as encouraged by the article you linked to. That didn't do anything either. I do believe that it is something in the web data that is being supplied by the website. As before, if I remove data from Preferences/Privacy/webdata, the issue disappears briefly until the website supplies data again, then the issue is back. Something about the web data and Safari is problematic. Firefox and Chrome do not have this issue.
