HDMI MacBook can’t open applications

Plugging my MacBook Pro with an hdmi to my monitor it shows up but when I open say chrome it doesn’t show up it opens but doesn’t show up same with multiple applications only thing I can open that shows up is settings

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

You may be set up in "Extended desktop" This is the Arrangement pane:



The cursor moves freely across the imaginary boundary between displays, and can drag a window across to the other display. More interestingly, the cursor can drag a window so that it splits displays, and it will continue to scroll and update "the right way"

The blue blocks are proportional to the resolutions of each display. They can be dragged up down left right until they match the actual physical display on your bench. Then the cursor will move intuitively.


The white top stripe on one display is an Icon for the MenuBar, and you can drag it to the display you want to be "Primary", hosting the Menubar as well as the designated startup screen.
