Internal microphone not working

How can I fix my internal microphone to be functional. I have tried many things but nothing happened. I cannot see microphone even in System Preferences "Security and Privacy" tab. Is there a any way to fix it or I have to go for a new external mic.

iMac, OS X 10.10

One more question, and I'm sorry if it sounds basic but: The iMac microphone is laser cut into the top of the computer. Is it possible that you have a piece of tape that might be covering the camera lens also covering the microphone? You could try tapping the spot where the mic is located to see if it registers at all.

Any work done inside of the case could have also led to the cable being severed or not plugged back in. That is another possibility.

You could also try flashing the NVRAM and resetting the SMC (system management controller):

NVRAM

SMC

Lastly, it isn't the end of the world to just have to use a USB mic. There are quite a few options out there that might even provide better quality audio for your specific environment than you had before.

Hope this helps.

The computer recognises that there is a microphone. I can see it in System Preferences > Sound > Input and System Information under Hardware. I also run a hardware test and everything is fine. I reinstall the mac os. It is an old iMac (20 inch early 2008) running under yoshemite. I also made a new account with administrative authority, but the mic is dead. I cannot recording anything. Dictation is on." Use ambient noise reduction" is unchecked. The input volume is at the highest point but when I test the input level nothing happens.
