im trying to get my mac ready for sale but i need to erase all the files first and for some reason disk utility wont allow me to use the erase function. any ideas on what to do?

You’ll see that there isn’t another option if the erase button doesn’t work though. That’s the issue.
You have to be in Recovery Mode.
