Warning - iPhone4 glass breaks easily

Front glass of my iPhone4 shattered yesterday when I got out of the car. Fell from my lap to the pavement and that was all she wrote. Short fall, a little higher than knee height.

Checking around, the glass is not as durable as Apple would have you think. There are lots of shattered iPhones and it's only a month old. I have their bumper too to protect it so it isn't like I haven't taken precautions.

So what's with designing a cell phone out of glass? Two sheets of relatively thin glass. Seeing how easy it shattered I think this is a poor design. Certainly not one I can recommend.

I have two iPhones in my household and one was shattered falling off the couch hitting the corner on the carpet at about 2.5 feet. I can tell you there will be a high number of repairs on this model.... much higher than the 3Gs version. I took it to the Apple store and I was one day from the 30 day return. The Genius gave me a replacement for 50% discount on the $199 charge. Happy for now.... THEY WILL BREAK VERY EASY.... I do not see this design being carried forward on the next generation.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. Shattered the screen after a VERY short fall.

Apple charged me $200 to replace the phone after I'd had it for 2 weeks.

I dropped my 3GS several times from this same height or higher and it never affected the screen in any way.

Not a good design for durability... what ****** me off the most is that Apple will replace the piece of glass and resell the phone for a huge profit, they gave me NO option to repair, only to buy a new phone.

1) The phone is more durable, not drop and break resistant.
2) Lightning doesn't strike twice. Why would you expect a drop to be the exact same either?
3) You dropped it, not Apple. Why should they fix your clumsiness for free?

Then why did you buy it knowing it was made out of glass? You dropped it and it broke. Others have dropped theirs and nothing has happened. There are plenty of youtube videos of people dropping their iphone 4's from higher than you claim and nothing breaks. It just hit the wrong way. If you bought it from best buy you could have got the insurance on it and you could have gotten it repaired.

Durability comes at the expense of aesthetics unfortunately, and apple kit is all about the looks and desirability. Designing a cell phone with glass front&back may seem crazy to some, but it's decisions like these that convince people to buy when they're holding it in their hand in the apple store.

I personally love the design, but it does make you treat the phone a lot more carefully as a result of the glass screen. I'm very paranoid about dropping it.

Davebreak,

The same thing happened to me. Were you able to get it replaced or repaired without having to purchase a new phone? I am sick about this. I have had an iphone for 3 years, and this is the first time I have had physical damage. I have only had this one a month and it had only been out of the case a few minutes before I noticed the crack.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I thought in the US this sort of repair had a price of $199, which is only about a third of the price of a new phone?

You are correct, but people tend to forget they're dropping a $500 - $600 piece of equipment. Most purchases here in the US are subsedized by Apple, who requires you to sign a new 2 year agreement, as they recover the cost of the subsidy through our montly bills. So, when someone is quoted $199 to get thier phone replaced, they're thinking they're paying full price, withour realizing they're paying a greatly reduced price.........Now why someone would have a nearly $600 piece of equipment not in a case is beyond me. I case my phones and having done so, my phones are perfect. I've only really paid for one iPhone. I sell the nearly perfect one I've used the past year for what I paid for it and get a new one at no charge to me......
