Family Sharing with individual payment options

I have shared with my son with my Apple one, however he needs to be able to pay for his own apps, instead of charging the family payment method. How can this be done?

He must have personal balance in his account so it gets charged first. Using gift cards is a common method.

"Some purchases aren’t charged to your Apple ID balance

If you're in a Family Sharing group, purchases are charged to your personal Apple ID balance. If you don't have enough Apple ID balance to pay for the purchase, the remainder is charged to the family organizer's primary payment method."

If he is under 18 you can set up Ask To Buy on his account. This won't tell you how much he has in his balance but if he goes over you can tell him you won't let him buy anything more until he pays you back.

If he is over 17 you cannot set Ask To buy but you could threaten to make him leave Family Sharing unless he is more fiscally responsible.
