Apple gift card

I purchased an item from apple with my gift card. I had a balance remaining on card and went to put in onto iTunes. Instead of just putting the small amount, it put the entire card amount when i had already purchased something from Apple. Now apply is saying they need another card and cannot use that one???? How do i get the money transferred back on to the card from my iTunes account? THanks
