Updating a late 2009 iMac

I am currently using an outdated iMac. I am trying to download the update to OS X El capitan. I know the entire process however after the os x is done installing my computer does not restart and upgrade. Even when i manually restart it the software stays the same (10.10.5). I need this sorted asap. Thanks

A late 2009 iMac can only be upgraded to High Sierra. That said, it is still a very good operating system and has been stable for years.
