macOS is not updating - MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

This problem was happening before and I did not really care about it much but the MacBook is being slower so I want to update now. This was my mother's MacBook Pro (Specs are in the bottom) and I recently took it and started using it for school and things related to that. Today (January 23, 2021), I was trying to update this MacBook but after the update which took about an hour. It just booted me back to the software update section in the settings. I tried updating last week and the same thing happened. I also reset the MacBook on (January 23, 2021) and tried updating again and still nothing happened. If anybody knows the solution to this problem please let me know. Thank you!

I have almost 40 GB of free space and my MacBook Pro is compatible with the update. I have checked this before asking this question. So there is no way I can not upgrade to the newer version of macOS. I watched some YouTube videos and seen other questions and nothing really worked.

I suspect "almost 40 GB of free space" is not enough. Try making some room and try again.

If you are choked to the gills I would not risk it.

SSD like to have 20-25% free storage at all times to be able to function efficiently.

HDD like to have 10-15% free storage at all times to be able to function efficiently.

Try something like OmniDiskSweeper for a GUI to get a good look at itemized file size and location:
