Dead Battery , no power when plugged in

I have a 2009 Mac Book Pro that was working fine , although I had been advised the battery was not in good shape. Now won't recharge and will not power up although is plugged in. I am wondering if a new battery will fix or if I should check for other problem. I use it as secondary device.

Is it time to retire it ? I note a battery is not all that much , but hate to buy it if it won't solve the problem.

Thanks. I have had it plugged in but there has been no light. After your reply now thought I would try the adapter from newer MBP but of course plug was different. However. when the old one was reinserted the light came on. I know I need a battery but might need a new power adapter, too. Thanks again for prompting me to check the adapter. Will see what happens in the AM.
