MacBook Air mid-2013 to CJ791 Samsung Thunderbolt - Black Screen

Looking for Macbook Air and external monitor help! I recently bought the Samsung CJ791 Thunderbolt monitor, but I am having difficulty connecting to my mid-2013 Macbook Air which is running Big Sur 11.1 (same issues before updating the OS from Catalina). I've connected an Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable to an Apple Thunderbolt 3-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter and plugged that into the thunderbolt port in the back of the monitor. Both the monitor and the MacBook Air are plugged into their power source. Although the Macbook Air is detecting the monitor when checking display preference, the monitor remains a black screen. The monitor works with a different Dell laptop and has no issues with visibility. Am I missing something? Has anyone else run into this issue?
