Macbook storage consumed by system

This continues to happen to my Macbook. I spent three hours on the phone in order to solve this issue the last time after repeatedly explaining that issue was not in how much stuff I have on my laptop, but an error with "system."

We understand from your post that System storage is taking up the majority of your storage space on your Mac. While you have spoken to phone support in regards to this issue, it has not been resolved. If you have not already, backing up your Mac and reinstalling macOS may help.
