Older ipod question

I have an older ipod with iOS 6.1.6 and would like to download more music from my itunes library but cannot see it in my devices.

At the very end it says if nothing works, contact Apple Support.

Frankly it wouldn't surprise me if something running iOS6 has been kind of forgotten about, particularly if you are trying to use this with a recent macOS version.
