FireWire to Thunderbolt for Target Disk Mode?

I have a base model 21.5 iMac, mid-2010 that finally gave up the ghost last year. I’m hoping I can boot it in TDM to recover the couple of things not on my external HD with my mid-2014 MBP but I don’t know what cable to use. Will a FW to TB adapter work or should I borrow my mom’s mid-2011 MBP and use FW to FW?

Thanks!

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Hi LadyTesla,

The best way to access the data is to use the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter - Apple, and then you also use a FireWire 800 cable. Or, you can use a FireWire 800 cable with your mom's MacBook Pro. Either way, you need to buy at least a FW 800 cable, and possibly an adapter.

Just know that the cause of the iMac dying could be the hard drive, so this may not work. It may turn out your data is corrupted.

Cheers,

Jack
