ipod classic 3rd gen issues

hello so i have a ipod classic 3rd gen, and it wont boot, it shows the folder icon that prob shows a dead hdd but, i tested the drive using smart and nothing is wrong with it, but itunes wont restore it error(1429) unknown error, and when the ipod is plugged into the mac, the 40gb ipod shows as a 5.64gb external hdd in disk utility so idk what to do, im at a loss, if anyone has any ideas please let me know.thanks again
