Mac OS update

my sister had a mid 2012 macbook pro and it was being really slow so i checked it out and she was still on yosemite from 2014 so i expected a slow update from yosemite to catalina but it went from 30 mins remaining to a grey bar to 46 mins remaining and it has dropped 2 minutes to 44 in the past hour

I didn’t do this but it ended up working anyway at first i tried to upgrade to high sierra and it said i did but when i looked at about the mac it said i was still in yosemite so i looked up the newest update that was compatible with my device and after about 3-4 hours everything is set up and running smooth as of now next time i’ll wait before coming to the discussions thanks a lot though

Upgrading is the Culprit:

Upgrading directly from Yosemite(macOS 10.10) to Catalina(macOS 10.15) is not an option. You have to first upgrade to High Sierra(macOS 10.13), and then, once High Sierra is installed, upgrade to Catalina. So, to install each, use USB Bootable Installers.

Important - Always Backup Prior:

Have you recently created a backup of your Mac prior to all of this? if so, restore from the backup. If not, then take this as a learning experience, knowing to always backup your Mac, prior making any major change to your device, such as a macOS upgrade.
