Thank you. I note that my wife's phone is set to accept facetime, but still not available on my phone to reach her.
I can reach her via the Facetime app, though.
Since we are on the same mobile plan, I wonder if that is the reason (or we also share the same Apple ID).

Your Mobile Plan does not matter. As long as you do not have the same phone number. The problem is probably that you use the same Apple ID. If your phone number is linked to your shared Apple ID, this is why she can FaceTime you from contacts. Since her phone number is not part of "your" Apple ID, this may be why you can not see her as a FaceTime user in the contacts. How you can call her from the FaceTime app I have no good answer.
Sharing 1 Apple ID is not a good idea. I would recommend she gets her own Apple ID, also you can possibly. use family sharing so she still has access to the apps you purchased.

If the contact you are looking at has FaceTime turned on, it will appear in your contact. If they do not, then you will not be able to see the FaceTime icon.
