FaceTime difference

macOS 10.11 I have not used FaceTime for several years. Now I wish to use it again. When I look in Contacts, some of the entries have the video camera and the phone handset lit up, and I am able to click on them and make contact with the person. Other cards in Contacts do not have the camera and handset illuminated and will do nothing when clicked. Why are some connectable and some not?

iMac, OS X 10.11

Aha! I discovered the solution today. And it's very logical; I should have realized it myself. A friend just sent me their Apple ID. I entered it into another field on their card. As soon as I did, the camera and handset lit up. OOOHH! (Insert here appropriate emoji, perhaps palm to forehead.) The Contacts program only recognizes email addresses which it realizes are registered Apple IDs. So, although I had already entered their usual email address in my Contacts book, that was not their Apple ID which happens to be a different address. So, the program had been letting me know that this person was not capable of receiving a call because it did not see an Apple ID. --Young at Heart
