Is this for real?
I got a message telling me to download an app now from the app store because my battery and iPhone were infected by a virus and malware that was detected.

All such messages are scams from criminals. Never, never, never download anything based on a popup message. Close the offending page and avoid sites that are involved in such bogus advertising tactics.
