messages not showing on iPad - not even window

2 days ago Messages did not show any old messages or even the window, all I had was a light gray bar across the top of the window and the menu bar. No vertical side bar for messages.

When I went to iCloud in Prefs, Messages was “checked”. When I clicked not to use iCloud I got what is shown below. I have tried both options of canceling and disable along with numerous shutdowns.

I got a new text and it showed a red badge but nothing showed in the window. Now that badges is gone and several texts today have not put a badge on Messages

Messages seem to be normal on the iPhone.

There have not been any updates done in the last week
