Lost all of my unread messages tag after restore. Can't tell unread from read messages in iMessage.

I restored my iPhone from backup and things are missing. I had 500+ unread messages and the badge on the iMessage icon had the number stated as so.

Both the badge number and the blue circle dot showing which messages are unread have been cleared. Upon restoring from icloud backup, it seems the system automatically marked all the messages as "read".

How do I get this corrected and have the messages properly showing their unread status? AND have the badge numbers return correctly to the iMessage icon?

Juztjosh had the same issue 4 months ago still with no resolution or comments on the reason or fix.

If you restore from a backup then all the data that is on the backup is restored on your device after deleting everything currently on your device.

Let us assume...

Date1: Backup date

Date2: Message Unread Date

Date3: Current Date / Restoration Date

Given that --> Date1 < Date2 < Date3

Risk of restoring on Date3:

You will lose data between the Date1 & Date 3
By default, iTunes creates incremental backup over the existing backup such that you only will have one backup per device on iTunes

Thank you @SranvanKra for the insight.

I agree with your logic above. However, i backed up on Date 3 in your example above. Got a new device and then did the restore from icloud option on the new device.

I would say I got most of the data back, However, all of the messages that used to show as "unread" and have the unread blue circle dot beside an unread text/iMessage, are all lost.

My iMessage app has no bubble indicating unread messages after the restore was done.

Also, I did not get all of my open safari pages back on my phone after the restore
