Help with Google settings

Hi. For the life of me cannot turn off google trending searches on laptop, or iPhones, I have checked on all devices"do not show popular searches" - will not stop trending. Second question can anyone tell me the correct way to have safe search filters on devices. Do you check "Show explicit results, or Hide explicit results if you want to activate safe search. Thanks.
