I have an iMac from 2009. The OSis Yosemite 10.10.5. I cannot use iTunes to expand my music collection to my iPhone because I have not upgraded my OS. But it seems that I cannot upgrade to anything that is acceptable.

I cannot synch my music library on my iMac to my i{hone because the former's OS is Yosemite 10.10.5 I also cannot upgrade to anything higher to enable me to use the iTunes and iPhone together.

Not sure how much difference it'll make, but you should be able to install 10.13.6

Try reinstalling this in Safe Mode, but not using Firefox...
