importing .epub files to Books.app

All of the Apple support information regarding Books.app says I can only import .pdf files to books. Can I not also import epub files? I have converted some pdfs to epub. Not only do epub files read better than pdfs. Not only that, any pdf file saved to Books is opened with Preview.app which, to my mind, defeats the purpose of using Books at all.
