Sync apple books pdf progress between macos and ios

When I open the pdf from apple books on mac, it opens up in arcobat reader.

I suppose that's not going to sync the progress to apple books?

What can I do so it'll open up in apple books and sync the progress between ios and macos?

pdfs on a Mac always open in the app chosen to open them, never in the Books app itself – progress cannot be synced between them.
