Books.app syncs on iPhone and iPad, but not on Mac

I have Books on my iPhone, iPad and Mac. If I open a book on the iPhone or iPad, it opens in the Books app, and it will sync my reading progress. In other words, if I read up to page 20 on my iPhone, it will open at page 20 when I open it on my iPad.

But if I open the Books app on my Mac, the book opens in Preview, and does not bring me to the last page read on the other device.

Am I doing something wrong? I'm using the latest OS on all devices.

Is your Mac iCloud account set in system settings to allow Books syncing?

Apple menu-> System Preferences -> Internet Accounts -> iCloud -> iCloud Drives -> Options

And on the next screen make sure Books.app is selected and hit Done. Use the right scrollbar if visible to get to the Books.App

You can change it to Books.app, though the options with Books.app is different than Preview.

To change the default app, select the document in the Finder by clicking it once, and then select Get Info in the File menu.

Then select the Open With section, and then if you really want to change all, you can do so from the info of that one document that is a PDF.

It sounds like the book you are reading is in pdf format and is expected behaviour ie pdfs stored in the Books app on a Mac always open in Preview and will not sync the page as do iPhones/iPads.

Hi - thanks for the reply.

Yes, Books.app is selected in iCloud Drive. But when I open a .pdf in Books.app on my Mac, shouldn't it open in Books.app? It opens in Preview.
