My daughters iMac started an update last night, today the update window shows 33 minutes but the status bar does not show activity, it's been this way for 24 hours. We can't get it to respond. Can we shut it down and restart? Help.

If you have a wireless keyboard connect it with its charging cable and try booting into Safe Mode again, i.e. holding down the Shift key.
And, for clarity you are referring to updating a Photos library, right?
Shut down, immediately pressed and held the "shift" key until the apple logo. Same screen, still 33 minutes. It has been that way for the last 30 minutes.
Let's try this:

Go ahead and force it off by pressing and holding the power button, until the screen turns off, then, turn it back on, and see if it completes.

Give it a couple hours now to finish up. While we wait, do you have a backup of the iMac?
She thinks it backs up to iCloud.
OK. Keep me posted on the macOS update status.

Update failure, update window says 33 minutes, been that way since last night.
