How to adjust sharpen tool in Final Cut Pro

I'm using FCP version 10.5.1 and I cannot understand the sharpen tool effect! When I pick it up and hover it over the section of my video I want to sharpen, a green plus sign appears - but when I drop it, the effect just disappears! I've watched a few videos on this and, for everyone else, a "Sharpen" option with a sliding scale appears in the Effects panel on the right.

Nothing appears in the Effects panel for me when I drop the sharpen tool onto my clip. Is it used in a new way with this version of FCP? Please help!

When you drag and drop any effect onto a clip in the timeline, you are applying the effect to the clip. It does not vanish, but you then should open the Inspector (command-4) to adjust the effect settings. (You will probably find that you have several Sharpen effects applied. )

Depending on the effect, and the clip, it may not be apparent immediately that you applied it, as the change may be subtle; and this one of those cases. For other effects the changes are more obvious.
