Insufficient memory for update

How do I create enough room to receive the current update? I have just 3 apps; no photos, podcasts, music, etc. I've removed everything I can. This happens with every update. The last time, I reset the watch to its factory default to make enough room. I then had to re-create and re-link the watch as though it was new. I don't want to spend so much time working on this. Why is the iWatch so maintenance-intensive???
