SideCar crashes my M1 MBAir regularly

Hey people,

I've recently bought a M1 MacBook Air (8gb Ram, 512gb Storage). I have an iPad Pro (10,5" 2017) and I was looking forward using the sidecar feature.

At first I was simply amazed - it worked a treat and when comparing documents is just perfect to have more screen real estate.

However, when locking the iPad without disconnecting the laptop first in the system settings, the MacBook screen turned pink and the machine restarted... I thought this was a one time thing but it has happened another couple of times since then. Now it even crashes suddenly even if I am not even doing anything.

The machine restarts, tells me there was an unexpected error and it had to restart the system. That takes about 30 seconds but it is still annoying.

Further, can anyone explain to me how to switch from the wireless connection to a wired connection? even if I connect the iPad via cable it still seems to use the wireless connection and I "trust" the iPad in the finder settings.

Hope someone can help me

kind regards

Felix

Hello Felix,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like your Mac restarts unexpectedly when locking your iPad. We're happy to take a look into this and help.

Please follow the steps here with your Mac: If your Mac restarted because of a problem

Then try some steps to fix Handoff:

  1. Turn off Handoff, and then turn it back on again. Do this on both your iPad and Mac: Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices
  2. Turn off and on Bluetooth.
  3. Restart both iPad and Mac.

You can connect directly to your Mac with the USB charge cable that came with your iPad. Check out the information here to set your iPad to trust your Mac: About the 'Trust This Computer' alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Let us know the result.

Have a great day.
