Audio output not working through HDMI

My new M1 Mac Mini running Big Sur 11.1 is connected to two monitors via HDMI (one through the mini's HDMI port, the other through one of the mini's thunderbolt ports).

Everything works fine, both audio and video, until the mini goes to sleep. When it wakes up, the monitors still work fine, but with no audio (sound now comes out of the mini's integrated speaker).

In the sound system preferences, the monitors do not show up at all, the only choices are the mini's internal speaker and AirPlay devices (in Audio MIDI Setup, the only choice is the mini's speaker).

The only way I found to get audio to go through HDMI again is restarting the mini...

Did anyone encounter a similar issue? Is there a known solution other than restarting?

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities LS-4p1,

We understand you're encountering an issue with audio after your Mac wakes from sleep, and we want to help.

Are the displays set to go to sleep before the Mac, or with it?

Do you see the display's audio in System Preferences > Sound > Output while sound is working as expected?

We look forward to using what we learn to help further.

Cheers!
