Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Air 4th Generation

Some of the keys on my keyboard seem to be switched. The “y” and “z” keys have been switched. I assumed I would be getting a “QWERTY” keyboard. Can’t figure out which keys to use for “shift” key and some punctuation. Anyone else having problems?

Hello Sunnyhiker21,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand you're unable to use specific keys on your Magic Keyboard that's paired to your iPad. We'll be happy to help.

We suggest to see if there's an action taking place or a change within the settings of the modifier keys. You'll want to go in Settings > General > Hardware Keyboard > Modifier Keys. You can adjust the settings for your keys or select, "Restore Defaults" to reset the original actions for the keyboard. Here's an article with additional details: Use keyboard shortcuts on an external keyboard with iPad

Please let us know if that helps.

Kind regards.

You have a keyboard for Swiss German/French. See Swiss Multilingual at

If you want a qwerty keyboard intended for English, you have to return it and get a different one.

If you want the printing on the keys to match what appears on the screen, you have to check Swiss German or Swiss French instead of "US" under Hardware Keyboard.

(Sorry for the misunderstanding: In my earlier posts I thought you had a misbehaving qwerty keyboard)

I've tried all of the suggested ideas to figure out this keyboard. So far, no luck.

Please tell us what you have checked when you tap over at the right edge of settings > general > keyboard > hardware keyboard for English. It should look like the picture below: With that checked, output should be qwerty, while & should be on Shift 7 and ^ on Shift 6.

Go to settings > general > keyboard > hardware keyboard and tap over at the right edge. That is where you determine the mapping of your keys. For English choose US or ABC, and NOT "automatic" or something else.

Also make sure that in settings > general > keyboard > keyboards you remove anything from the list that you do not actually need to use.

Let us know if you still have problems when Hardware Keyboard is set to US.

Sunnyhiker21,

Thanks for getting back to us and for verifying that information. Let's verify that, "QWERTY" is selected under the language you have set on your iPad. This may help resolve the letter, "y" and "z" from switching. On your iPad, please go to Settings > General > Keyboards > select your language > QWERTY.

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Cheers!
