Hi Dennis_w_d,

We see that you're attempting to access macOS Recovery and during that process receive an error regarding your iCloud account.

To aid us in isolating this issue, can you clarify the following?

  • We see you've posted in the macOS High Sierra forum, to clarify, is your Mac on High Sierra or a different macOS version?
  • During what part of the startup process do you receive this message?
  • Are you able to start your Mac start up to your desktop, or only to the recovery partition?
  • Do you recall if FileVault was enabled prior to this issue? We ask, as this error is related to the FileVault encryption process.
  • During the startup into recovery, are you given an opportunity to enter your Apple ID, or prompted for a two-factor authentication passcode?

Take a look at more info regarding FileVault below:

Let us know the additional requested details in a reply to this post, and we'll follow up from there.

Cheers!

It was operating in High Sierra before I attempted to install BigSur. The installation stalled and after rebooting the trouble began. The computer is essentially frozen. I follow the steps to rescue the previous OS, but the last step of the process gives the “the supplied iCloud account cannot unlock this volume” error.

The Mac does not start. It goes to a flashing “?” folder icon

No

Not sure. If it was part of the High Sierra installation, then probably.

Yes. Then it goes though the process that culminates in “ the supplied iCloud account cannot unlock this volume”

It is an endless circle. I did it multiple times, with the same result.

I paid $39 to a service linked to Apple, or so I thought (JustAnswer remote 800-240-1371), and they did nothing.

Should I just take the computer to an Apple store to get it restored?
