The Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter includes a pass-through Lightning connector - to which you can connect your iPad Power Adapter. This connection allows charging of your iPad whilst connected to your TV using HDMI.

I have used the lightning connector with success. I now have a new iPad Air (2020 version) and the USB-C adapter will not charge the iPad. It may be a defective unit.
