Iphone 12 mini Charging Issue

only 80% charging happened while charging iPhone 12 mini through MagSafe charger with 20W power adapter. Also, the phone is overheating, the battery is not going further than 80%. Is this is expected?

Yes. If your iPhone is heating, the charging may be cut off by software to protect the device.

Also, there is a thing called 'Optimised Battery Charging' designed to reduce battery ageing. Your iPhone gradually learns from your charging habits and then stops it from charging after 80%. Now, once it thinks that you will need to use your iPhone again, the device starts charging past 80%.

Let me give you an example.

Suppose you plugin your iPhone every night to charge. (say around 11:30 PM). And you wake up at 6 AM. Now, your iPhone will learn this habit of yours.

After that, when you plug your iPhone to charge, it will normally charge upto 80%. But after that, it will stop charging for the night. And once it is, say 4:30 AM or 5 AM, your iPhone will again start charging beyond 80% (that is 80% to 100%). This extends your battery life.

Optimised Battery Charging is also dependent on your location. So, if you are travelling and plug in your iPhone into charging at night at an airport, the charging won't stop at 80% but normally go to 100%.

This is a helpful feature, and you should leave it enabled. Still, if you wish to turn it off, here is how to do that.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Battery.
  2. Tap Battery Health.
  3. Turn off Optimised Battery Charging.

Hope it helps.
