Apple ID in the system preferences freezes

When I try to log out of Apple ID in the system preferences, I get the spinning rainbow wheel and it either freezes or quits out on it's own. The same thing happens when I go through the 'Internet Accounts' and try to remove icloud from the accounts list.

How do I resolve this?

Thank you!

Hi there benbeaudoin,

It sounds like you're unable to sign out of iCloud with your Apple ID on your Mac because System Preferences isn't responding as expected. We're glad you've joined us in Apple Support Communities, and we can provide some guidance.

To start, try signing out while your Mac is booted in safe mode. Learn how to boot into safe mode and sign out of iCloud from the support articles below:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Sign out of iCloud on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac

If that doesn't seem to help, try removing your Mac from your iCloud devices with the guidance here:

See information about devices signed in with your Apple ID

We hope this helps.

Cheers.

System preferences is not responding force quit it https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201276

Another method see the article https://support.apple.com/guide/activity-monitor/quit-a-process-actmntr1002/10.14/mac/10.15

Open activity monitor , take cursor on top menu bar > view > click on windowed processes - if you see system preferences ( written in red colour system preferences not responding ) , select it go to force quit and quit system preferences .

create new admin account in users and groups and monitor it Set up users, guests and groups on Mac - Apple Support

if these steps fail erase the hard drive and reinstall Mac OS How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Hi Karina,

Thanks for the guidance on my problem.

I've tried to remove my device from iCloud and then logged back from my device and the Freezing still happened.

I took a quick look at the link you shared about starting up from safe mode.

Sounds like there's a couple ways to approach from that direction. I need my computer for work, so i'll try

over the weekend in case I run into any time consuming trouble shooting.

Thank you for the help! I'll update you on wether I have success or not.

Regards,

Ben
