Old Ipod Connecting to new laptop for downloads of music

My husband has his father's old Ipod. We are trying to connect it to my laptop and remove some of the music and add more. We have the original cord that attached to the wall plug or became a USB type connector. This connector doesn't look like a traditional USB connector, It looks like one end has slightly rounded edges and looks maybe a tad shy of the length of typical USB connector. Do I need an adaptor or something? This laptop is 6 months old. Thanks OAW28

Could it be a FireWire connector? If so then working with such an old model might not be that easy. See Identify your iPod model – Apple Support.

So the model is Ipod click wheel or 4th generation. Is there any hope of using this device?

I don't know. It might be possible with a USB to FireWire adaptor, but assuming you're running Windows it is possible that iTunes for Windows doesn't know how to sync over FireWire.
