Thanks for getting back. I managed to change the boot disk back to the old one by holding down the option key and the start button when restarting the mac as described here Change your Mac startup disk - Apple Support

Big problem AGAIN! finally sorted, it was a space problem, hunted down by second senior support guy, EXCELLENT work.
Failed during auto update. Safe Mode fail. Clear RAM fail. Recovery Mode fail.
Recovery mode Space problem found.
There needs to be a warning about the space required, the "new" update method seems to require a lot of extra space.
Bought a 500GB Mac mini, it is not a viable machine you MUST have extra serious storage from day one. I have learned a lot more today from all the support people. Thanks.
finally did installed after many hours of agony, stress
don't know if the cable lines were full or not
did the same when Big Sur was installed
apple support said it was overwhelmed with others installing
Hey
facing issue in updating.
tried and tried but nothing.
i think there is space crunch. But now am stuck on the 2 windows as below. Any help please ?
What happens when you try? How much free space is on the drive?
have 81.2 gb free space from 120 gb
Ok. So what happened when you tried?
says it is "preparing macOS big sur 11.2 update " then takes hours
but it says '10 minutes to remaining"
Hmmm. It should say Preparing for 15mins, then 10mins, then 5mins, then it should start installing. It shouldn't take hours. Are you on an Intel or M1 MacBook Air?
I see. It is possible the download servers are overwhelmed. Glad it was resolved for you.
My daughter has exactly the same problem, her mac is now useless and she needs it to study from home. This a really poor update, how can we roll back ?
Try updating the OS with the full installer.
Could you solve it? Im having the same problem!!
